Ephraigm H. Smith collection, 1795-1919.

Abstract Correspondence includes letters to Caleb Smith of Pitt County from James T. Braxton, who had moved from Pitt County to Jackson County, Fla. He describes the sea voyage from Charleston to Florida; life in a new community there; a slave uprising; and prices of various crops, including corn, pork, and flour. Other correspondence includes letters from a cotton seed company extolling the value of its product and letters from Harvey Smith, who describes his experiences while serving in the American Expeditionary Force during World War I, including camp life in South Carolina and Georgia, a submarine attack while he was crossing the Atlantic Ocean, and the routine of an American soldier on occupation duty in Germany. Also of interest are election polls for several precincts in Pitt County, most of which are from Clayroot Precinct. Included are the results of the 1860 Presidential election and the names of voters for the precinct and tabulations of the votes. Other items include local tax lists for the Chicod area of Pitt County; business records, which consist of bills, statements, notes on loans, and a slave bill of sale; legal documents, which include marriage licenses, wills, land records, tax receipts, judicial statements, an affidavit for the trial of a slave, and documents appointing overseers for local roads; and a family record dating from 1770 until 1910 that records births, deaths, and marriages in the Smith family.
